I appreciate it. :)

There's a lot of really great design that's outside the realm of concrete, steel, and glass as we conceive of it, and there's also some great design that uses those materials in thoughtful, innovative ways - we as Westerners tend to think of architecture and interior spaces as boxes (because this is what we grew up with and see around us every day), and one of the things stressed to me many times over is that we should literally as well as figuratively think outside the box. Shape, material, construction, etc. are components that need to be used in ways that make sense for each project and not as strict delimiters.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04429502799905722242noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1714384499825993262.post-84033416518366584272012-11-04T09:09:47.633-08:002012-11-04T09:09:47.633-08:00Great post Elissa- very interesting topic. Although interior design is certainly not a strong point for me, I do pride myself in wanting nature and flowers and "life" all around me, both inside and outside. It brings such peace, joy, harmony, solitude and pride when things grow, change, bloom and propogate to the point I can share them with so many others. I've always known (since a child) that plants help to clean the air in your indoor environment (besides looking pretty) and provide habitat, shelter (shade in the summer and warmth in the winter)and food for our beautiful creatures we share this Earth with. Having a pond with fish, frogs, snails and tons of birdhouses, watching them build their nests, hatch their eggs, feed their young and seeing the babies grow and take their first flight, and watch the entire cycle again brings such amazement to me. Seeing the seasonal changes in the trees and gardens, the return of bright color and life in the spring and summer after the dormancy of winter, the calming change of palette in the fall as the plants and trees begin their season of rest, and waiting for the cycle of life to return is something I would desperately miss if we didn't live in an area with constant change. It brings hope and renewal to me every year of what still lies ahead. To take a complex flower (a lily, a magnolia, or a passion flower) and study their growth and structure never ceases to amaze my simple mind. On a personal and spiritual note, I can't imagine any of these miracles of life surrounding us, including our own reproduction, existing without having come from a Supreme Being or Creator. But that is just me!
Our Earth and environment is suffering and we will consequently pay a huge price if we don't continue and expand our efforts to save it and ourselves. I was a "recycler" long before it became popular. I drive my friends crazy by constantly reminding them to follow my path and always spout to people, "Love Your Earth"! People have called me "hippie", "tree hugger", etc. I am flattered by those titles.
Whether inside your home, on a small apartment balcony, or a modest back yard, there is no better therapy for the mind and soul than to get your hands dirty in the soil, plant something, nurture and care for it, watch it grow and it will reward you ten times over.
